Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
1251 AM PDT Fri Apr 4 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Isolated snow showers in Northern Nevada will dissipate this
morning. A few snow showers cannot be ruled out this afternoon
near the Utah/Nevada border. A warming trend is expected Saturday
through Thursday. By Thursday afternoon, high temperatures
throughout Northern and Central Nevada will be seventeen to
nineteen degrees above normal for this time of year.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night
An upper-level area of low pressure will be centered over
Southwestern Arizona this morning. Isolated snow showers in
Northern Nevada associated with this cyclone aloft will dissipate
this morning. The upper-level area of low pressure will progress
southeastward this afternoon. There may be enough lingering
atmospheric instability and moisture for a few snow showers near
the Utah/Nevada border this afternoon. High temperatures across
Northern and Central Nevada this afternoon will be six to eight
degrees below normal for this time of year.

A ridge of high pressure will amplify over California and the
Pacific Northwest tonight through Saturday night, resulting in dry
weather. Low temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada
tonight will be about five degrees below seasonal values. High
temperatures across Northern and Central Nevada Saturday afternoon
will be near normal for this time of year. Here are probabilities
of maximum temperatures of 55 degrees or higher for locations in
Northern and Central Nevada on Saturday, April 4th, 2025:

Winnemucca - 100%
Battle Mountain - 100%
McDermitt - 100%
Tonopah - 98%
Carlin - 98%
Elko - 95%
Lund - 95%
West Wendover - 90%
Eureka - 85%
Ely - 80%

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday
Ensemble guidance remains in good agreement for a ridge of a high
pressure situated over the western U.S. on Sunday. Highs will
reach into the upper 50s to lower 60s with overnight lows ranging
from the 30s to 40s. A Pacific Northwest trough and cold front
advances eastward, bringing light valley rain and mountain snow
showers from Monday into Tuesday. Most of the precipitation will
fall Monday, mainly north of I-80. Snow levels will be above 7,000
feet, with light snowfall concentrated in higher terrain. Winds
will increase out of the south-southwest Monday at 15-20 mph, with
gusts of 30-40 mph.

A gradual warming trend is expected to persist Tuesday through
Thursday as high pressure strengthens over the forecast area.
Highs will reach into the upper 70s with overnight lows in the
40s. Afternoon highs across northern and central Nevada will reach
around fifteen degrees above normal by Wednesday. Near-record
warmth is anticipated in Ely Wednesday afternoon.

Starting Friday, uncertainty emerges as cluster analysis and
probabilistic ensemble guidance diverge, with some models
indicating another Pacific Northwest trough advancing eastward,
while others suggest a persistent ridge over the forecast area.

&&

.AVIATION...
A low pressure system is expected to move east into the Rockies
with VFR conditions expected at all terminals over the next 24
hours. Scattered to broken clouds with ceilings ranging from FL050
to FL100 will persist across northern and central NV. As the
system pushes east, probability of isolated snow showers is than
20% across portions of eastern NV, including KELY, but was not
included in the TAFs due to low confidence. Winds today will
generally be from the north at 5-10 kts, with gusts of 20-25 kts
expected at KELY and KTPH starting around 16-18Z and ending around
02-03Z Sat.
